Faster Conception When Predicting Ovulation

If you and your partner are trying to get pregnant and want to know ahead of time what your most fertile days of the month are, then using an ovulation predictor kit (OPK) is exactly what you need. These kits are an accurate and easy way to determine your fertile window so there’s no more guessing about your ovulation cycle. You can purchase an ovulation predictor kit at the pharmacy, grocery store and even online. There are several different brands available so find one that fits your price range and that is easy for you to purchase.

Just How do Ovulation Predictor Kits Work?

Ovulation predictor kits detect the luteinizing hormone (LH) that is present in your urine. LH levels will rise about 24 to 48 hours before you ovulate. Knowing the level of LH allows you to pinpoint your ovulation time during the month so that you know when you’re most fertile. The OPK is a good tool to use if you’re going through fertility problems. Many women think that just because they’re having a period that they’re ovulating. This isn’t true. You can have a regular menstrual cycle and still not be ovulating regularly. Most fertility specialists will recommend that you use an OPK so that your fertility can be tracked.

What’s the Best Time to Use an Ovulation Predictor Kit?

There are some best times of the month to use the OPK. Determine the number of days that you have in your shortest menstrual cycle, and then count backwards by 14 to 16 days. You’ll want to start testing on that day. Don’t test your morning urine but instead test between 12 noon and 8 pm. As hydration can have an effect on the results, don’t drink a lot before taking the test. One thing to keep in mind is that OPKs don’t always work consistently if you’re over the age of 40. This is because the closer you are to menopause the higher levels of LH there will be in your body at all times.

Reading Ovulation Test Results

Some women find it hard to ready the results of the OPK. Most kits will have you look at two lines and compare them. You’ll know that you’re going to ovulate when the two lines look the same. This can sometimes be hard to tell. In order to make it easier for you to compare the lines, try and stick with the same brand of OPK from one month to the next. This way you’ll become more practiced with using it. The cost of OPK varies from one brand to the next but you can expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $50 for one. Each kit is good to use for one ovulation cycle. Some women start out using OPKs when they start tracking their fertility and then move on to just charting their BBT and checking their cervical mucus when they get the hang of it.

Scheduling Sex When Ovulating

Along with using an ovulation predictor kit you’ll want to schedule sex when you’re ovulating and are fertile. While “scheduling” time for intimacy may seem like it’s a bit too much it can be helpful if you and your partner work at different times and aren’t usually at home together on your fertile days. When you have a hectic agenda making sex a priority when you’re ovulating may seem like a chore however if you want to get pregnant fast it’s this scheduling that is going to make it easier for you to conceive. Using the predictor kit is going to help you determine when to plan time together with your partner.

Ovulation Predictor Kit or BBT?

Before ovulation predictor kits were available, you could chart your ovulation by taking your BBT (basal body temperature) and checking your cervical mucus. The main difference between an OPK and BBT is that when taking your body temperature you only know that you’ve ovulated after it’s happened. For this reason you need to keep a BBT chart for a few months before you can determine what your regulation ovulation cycle is. Using an OPK gives you the opportunity to know beforehand when you’re going to ovulate, without having to keep track for a few months and then analyze the results.

Will an Ovulation Predictor Kit Get You Pregnant Faster?

It’s important to remember that while an OPK is a great way to know when you’re ovulating so that you can plan intercourse around your fertile window; it’s no guarantee that you’ll get pregnant any faster. It takes up to one year for most healthy fertile couples to conceive. Even if you’re able to have sex when you’re most fertile, there are many different issues that affect your fertility. If you’ve been using an ovulation predictor kit for one year and still aren’t pregnant then it’s time to talk to your doctor. You’ll be able to provide accurate information about your ovulation cycle, which can be beneficial in determining if you have any infertility problems.
