The Importance of Eating Right When Trying to Conceive

When you’re trying to conceive it’s important to remember that what you eat and don’t eat has a direct impact on your fertility.

One of the key things that you can do to empower your body and your fertility is to eat a healthy diet before, and while you’re trying to have a baby. Get into the habit of eating foods that are healthy and nutritious.

This also means giving up certain foods that are going to negatively affect your fertility. The following guidelines list certain foods that you should avoid eating when you’re trying to get pregnant.

Not all Seafood is Good for You

A lot of seafood and fish contain high levels of mercury. Mercury has been linked to serious birth defects such as developmental issues and brain damage.

When you’re trying to conceive, cut back on the amount of seafood and fish that you eat. Fish that you should absolutely avoid include tuna, king mackerel, shark, and swordfish.

If you want to keep eating fish some good options are trout, halibut, wild salmon, and red snapper.

Get Rid of the Caffeine

Caffeine can affect your fertility as well as lead to early miscarriage and development problems for your baby.

Studies show that having just one cup of coffee a day can decrease your fertility by as much as half.  If you find that you absolutely can’t live without your morning cup of coffee make sure that you limit your intake to no more than 5 ounces a day.

Also, keep in mind that caffeine isn’t just found in coffee; it’s also found in black tea, chocolate, and soft drinks.

Avoid Eating Unpasteurized Cheese

For years now the FDA has been telling women who are trying to conceive and women who are pregnant to avoid eating unpasteurized cheese.

The reason for this is that unpasteurized cheeses can contain a bug known as Listeria. This germ is can cause serious complications to your baby during pregnancy.

To avoid Listeria poisoning you’ll need to eliminate any unpasteurized dairy products from your diet. Some common cheeses that are unpasteurized include feta, Camembert, Brie, and other soft cheeses.

Always check the labeling to make sure that you’re buying pasteurized dairy products.

Processed Foods Should be Avoided

When you’re trying to conceive you want your body to be as healthy and strong as possible. Make sure that the calories you’re consuming are coming from nutritious foods and not from processed foods.

Processed foods are generally high in refined flours and sugars. This may mean saying goodbye for a while to some foods you love, such as sugary breakfast cereals.

Skipping Fast Foods When Trying to Conceive

There is absolutely no room in your diet when you’re trying to conceive. Fast foods are extremely high in sodium, trans fats, saturated fats, and cholesterol which can all play a role in decreasing your fertility.

As well, eating a lot of fast food can lead to being overweight which is another factor in infertility problems.

Alcohol and Conception Don’t Mix

You shouldn’t really have to think about this one. If you want to boost your fertility both you and your partner will need to cut out the alcoholic beverages.

Alcohol affects how your liver works and a healthy liver is necessary to eliminate excess toxins from your body. When it comes to your partner, studies show that alcohol can affect both sperm quantity and quality.

Avoid Soy When Trying to Conceive

Even though we’ve all been told what a miracle food soy is, this is far from the truth when you’re trying to have a baby.

Most of the soy products that you buy are full of phytoestrogens, which closely mimics estrogen. There have been many studies done linking soy to decreased sex drive, infertility, and damage to the female and male reproductive systems.

You’ll also want to avoid eating soy when you’re pregnant as it can cause damage to your baby’s endocrine system.

Go Organic If You Want to Conceive

Try to buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever you can. Inorganic produce is filled with pesticides, chemicals, and other toxins which are harmful to both the female and male reproductive systems.

Some herbicides and pesticides can inhibit your egg from being implanted in the uterus. The following produce should be purchased organic whenever possible:

  • Apples
  • Bell peppers
  • Cherries
  • Cucumbers
  • Grapes
  • Peaches
  • Spinach
  • Strawberries

Even when you do become pregnant pesticides and chemicals can damage the developing fetus so it’s a good idea to start eating organically as much as you are possible.

Eating Right for Conception

Following the guidelines above will increase your chances of conception. When you’re trying to have a baby you want to take every precaution to make sure that you have an easy conception, pregnancy, and delivery.

Most women know what they should be eating when trying to conceive, but it’s just as important to know what to avoid so that your fertility is at its optimum.
