What To Eat Before you Try to Conceive

Are you getting ready to conceive and have a baby? If you are there are some things that you’ll want to know about what preconception diet is best so that you boost your fertility and health, and get pregnant as quickly as possible.

The healthier you are when you get pregnant, the easier your pregnancy and delivery are going to be. Start by taking a good look at what you’re eating now and what you can do to improve your diet so that you’re eating healthy and building up your body’s optimum health.

Focus on the Dairy Before You Try to Conceive

If you’re not already eating dairy, now is the time to start. Foods that are rich in calcium are going to ensure that your reproductive system is functioning as it should.

Preconception is the ideal time to store up on calcium which is not only good for your baby but for you as well! Calcium rich foods include yogurt, cheese, milk, almonds, sesame seeds, and soy products.

Eating more Iron before Pregnancy

Make sure that you’re getting enough iron. Women who don’t get enough iron can develop an iron-deficiency anemia which can lead to irregular menstrual cycles. When your menstrual cycle isn’t regular, you can have difficulty getting pregnant.

Add the following iron-rich foods to your diet: dried apricots, oatmeal, kale, and spinach.

Start Taking Prenatal Vitamins Before You Conceive

As soon as you know that you’re going to want to be pregnant in the next few months, it’s time to start taking prenatal vitamins. Prenatal supplements are filled with nutrients that are necessary for a healthy conception and pregnancy.

Studies show that taking a prenatal vitamin up to a year before you conceive decreases your risk of having a premature delivery. It also lowers the risk of your baby having a neural tube defect such as spina bifida.

Women who have taken prenatal vitamins also swear that their morning sickness symptoms were less severe.

Focus on Folic Acid for a Healthy Pregnancy

Just as prenatal vitamins can reduce your baby’s risk of having a neural tube defect, so can folic acid. Taking a folic acid supplement is your double insurance for protecting your baby.

Make sure that the prenatal vitamin you’re taking contains 400 to 600 micrograms of folic acid. Be sure to eat foods that are high in folates such as whole grains and leafy vegetables.

Your Ideal Weight for Conception

When it comes to trying to get pregnant your weight is going to play a major role. Being overweight or underweight can have an impact on your fertility, and how long it takes you to get pregnant.

Women who are overweight often have problems with their ovulation cycle. Regular ovulation is going to help you get pregnant a lot sooner than if you’re ovulating irregularly.

Women who are underweight also have a harder time getting pregnant because their body fat percentages are too low. As well, underweight women often have babies with a lower than average birth weight.

Try to reach your ideal weight before you try to conceive however, make sure that you lose or gain weight in a healthy way. For instance, losing about one to two pounds each week is going to be best for your overall health.

Foods to Avoid Before You Get Pregnant

There are some foods that you’ll to avoid before you get pregnant. Stay away from seafood that is high in mercury such as swordfish, shark, canned light tuna, and king mackerel. It’s also that time to say goodbye to sushi!

You’ll want to avoid eating meats and fish that are raw or undercooked. Yet another food to avoid eating is anything that is unpasteurized such as milk and cheese, as these food products have bacteria that are harmful to your baby during pregnancy.

Stop Skipping Meals Before You’re Pregnant

Skipping a meal may seem like it’s alright now and then but when you’re trying to get pregnant, and during your pregnancy, skipping a meal is one of the worst things that you can do.

When you’re trying to conceive, your body needs to be as healthy as possible so be sure to make time for breakfast each day. And when you’re pregnant your baby can’t afford for you to skip meals.

Eating regularly throughout the day is going to ensure that your baby gets a good supply of nutrition at all times.

Take a Good Look at Your Diet Habits

Take a good look at your preconception diet. What are the things that you need to improve on? The healthier you eat before you get pregnant, the easier it’s going to be for you to eat well throughout your pregnancy.
